Type 2 diabetes accounts for approximately 90 per cent of all people with diabetes and is usually diagnosed in individuals over 40 years old. Often a combination of genetic and environmental factors are involved. Research suggests that people from South Asian and black origins are more at risk and may develop type 2 diabetes at an earlier age.
