Kidney Disease

People with diabetes can get kidney disease (diabetic nephropathy).

Nephropathy is diagnosed by blood or urine tests, and may require changes to your treatment.

  • The risk can be reduced by keeping your diabetes and blood pressure well controlled
  • Your doctor may prescribe a tablet called an ACE Inhibitor or other tablets including statins (which lower cholesterol)
  • If you use insulin you may be given special dietary advice
